Cosplay, a fusion of the words "costume" and "play", denotes the act of embodying a fictional character. Typically these characters are extracted from the major divisions of Japanese popular culture, which include anime (a term utilized to refer specifically to Japanese animation), video-games, J-rock and J-pop groups, and cinema. However, as Cosplay matures its boundaries have begun to swell, encompassing a wide range of inspiration: in example, we have encountered Cosplayers dressed as everything from the Fawn out of the immensely popular Spanish film Pan's Labyrinth; to Nintendo's newest gaming system, the Wii (yes, the individual in question was decked out as the actual console). Anime conventions, which take place nearly every week in the United States, provide a venue for Cosplayers to showcase their constructions, as well as share in a common subculture.

The Masquerade [working title] aims to be the most thorough cinematic treatment of Cosplay ever undertaken: revealing the dynamic underlying the phenomenon, which is a mixture of hardcore artistry and a sense of play often under-represented in the modern world. Viewers will not only be treated to a kaleidoscope of imagery and information, but will have the opportunity to get to know the individuals beneath the costumes. The audience will chase the tale of Cosplay through the lives and workspaces of Cosplayers, and into the conventions which they transform into a dreamscape of creativity and idiosyncrasy. This is the story of Cosplay told by its devotees, and of its interactions with the entirety of their reality.
